Building upon a crisscross form I had in a previous sculpture I made last week I have begun to repeat the motif in different arrangements. I would like to make some kind of movable corner piece which can fold in and out. I will talk to Joe in woodwork about this soon. I’m not sure where this will take me however I am confident once I make it will lead to something.
Placing the components in this corner position I also found the forms they created when allowed to collapse very satisfying. I found there were a number of good arrangements that came out of stacking the wood in various corner arrangements. I would like to make big a work where a great deal of small wooden planks are evenly stacked.
It seems that, though I had not really been that interested in them at the time, the work I’m making seems to speak a lot of Carl Andre. I am likewise starting to become interested in incorporating more maths and logic into my works, again like Andre and a number of other artists of the time. It seems I am moving away from Mono-ha and materiality and more towards ideas of construction and materials being tools for making.
