Paper, sawdust, rubber bands and wood

A small issue I was having was that a lot of the pieces of wood I had, though similar in thickness, were very different lengths. I found this was distracting and confusing for the work as I was trying to create symmetrical neutral structures. I subsequently decided to cut all these pieces of wood into two similar lengths. This was very useful. I began to use the lengths of wood as their own measurements. I found a method of placing the wood in a series of corners which zig-zagged and then replacing every other block. This was its own method of creating symmetry/ evenly spaced blocks.

Cutting the wood in my studio I accumulated some sawdust which I decided to try using as its own sculptural material.

For bonfire night I decided I would try partly burning some large pieces of wood I had collected. I was interested in how the burning process would naturally colour / discolour and change the surface. I found the idea of adding colour by taking away / damaging the surface interesting.
