Bigger Rocks and Water

Recently while out on a walk I came across a huge pile of unused rocks in a construction site, a handful of which I have taken into the studio to work with. I intend to return the rocks once I am finished with them. During the week I have also began to experimenting with wetting my materials with water, particularly paper which I found turned translucent when soaked enough. I liked how its translucency brought out the debris on the floor the paper was placed on, in a many ways framing it with the edge of the paper. The use of water as a sculptural material has been something I’ve enjoyed thinking about, particularly in terms of ephemerality and fluidness/ non-solidness of its form. I have been looking a lot at Jannis Kornellis.

Experiments painting with water/ choosing areas of the paper to wet. Partly inspired by Jiro Takamatsu I began creating shadows of the rocks.

Returning to these works using wet paper the next day, I found that the dry paper was not as appealing. I have started to think about ways of keeping the works permanently wet.
