In the fleeting last few days before leaving Newcastle I began to use transparent plastic sheets. Placing them over rocks I found I could pour things over them without getting the rocks beneath them wet. I enjoyed the kind of tension/ strangeness this created.
I really don’t feel like any of these works are successful in the way I would like them to be. If I hadn’t had to leave due to a global pandemic they would have no doubt led to some interesting work. I was starting to come up with lots of new ideas including keeping the sheet taught and trapping liquid on them to evaporate. Sad.
The VERYYY last thing I did before fleeing the Newcastle Fine art building was to to create a small experiment. I fixed a piece of the plastic around a wooden frame then poured first vegetable oil then acrylic paint into it. I repeated this with another frame only this time using gesso. Hopefully if I ever get to return to my studio I will be able to see the result of this experiment.
